Netflix and Build: Your Guide to a Genuine, Non-Draining Community
For the love of self-awareness
Silent Read Time: 1 mins 39 secs
We’re interrupting your regularly scheduled newsletter to tackle a subject I'd wager is even more important: self-awareness via your community.
Tomorrow I’ll be posting about the guinea pig trials.
There’s no easy way to say this: If self-awareness was a currency, we’d all be broke. That’s where your community comes in.
It’s like your life is a Netflix movie. Your community is the person on the coach yelling at the TV telling you what NOT to do in your business — except you can hear them.
I’m just going to assume you’re like me. No established community with a group chat (I’m not salty) and trying to build genuine connections that are both strategic and enjoyable.
Disclaimer: I’m not some networking guru or Twitter titan with a 6-figure following. I’m a regular Jane trying to build a business and started off conversing with the "right" but wrong-for-me folks on Twitter. Now I work with people I like and not only does it not suck, but you get ideas, bonds, and even opportunities.
So here’s a mini exercise on building a (biz) community or foundation of people who aren’t drains:
Grab a piece of people and spend 5 minutes and list everyone you genuinely appreciate on your social platforms or in person.
Star the ones you'd love to assist
Circle those who appeal to your target audience
Diamond those who have strengths where you have weaknesses
Then ask yourself, why the hell are following/associating with anyone else?
The beauty of business? You don't have to entertain anyone you can't stand. That goes for clients and people you engage with.
As I'm navigating the early stages of solopreneurship, I've made that a key principle.
The last thing I want is to be stuck working with someone who gives me anxiety for the sake of a paycheck. And remember, you are literally building your business culture - even if it’s just you. You can be your best or worst boss. You choose.
What's the secret perk of networking and working with folks you genuinely enjoy? It creates opportunities to network, learn, and actually have a good time while doing it. And who doesn't want that?
Now I have non-rhetorical question for you. What problems are you hoping to get solved or helped with this newsletter? Respond to this email and let’s talk!
See you tomorrow!
