The Solopreneur's Focus: Mastering the Basics

Ditching the Shiny Objects: Are You Mastering the Basics?

Silent read time: 2 mins 24 secs

Welcome back, today's forecast has shiny object syndrome on the horizon. Be ready for unexpected cold friends from the sudden realization you've been neglecting the fundamentals and high chance of 'open loops' If you have a solid foundation, you'll make it out.

Today, we're shining a spotlight on: Shiny object syndrome vs the basics.

If you’re a solopreneur with more ideas than time, then this is for you. No, I’m not talking about Threads or AI. We're going to talk about those seductive million ideas you scream, "THIS WILL MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER!" Meanwhile, you're left with a pile of "open loops," unfinished tasks that make you feel like you've let yourself down.

Hey, I see that row of open tabs on your browser. It's the digital mirror to our overstretched bandwidth.

Funny, isn't it? We're always ready to take on the world but haven't yet mastered our basics. Preaching to the choir? Nah, I'm yelling at my own reflection.

Last week, I was fixated on launching my podcast, initiating a Twitter space. Then I had a candid moment with myself. Between my grand plans and half-baked solutions, my basics were dead.

So, now my main focuses are

  • securing my content wheel

  • building my newsletter

  • really understanding my audience.

Anything beyond these three points is a deviation, a distraction.

Time for a reality check. Let's test where your basic skills are:

  • Physical: Are you sleeping 7-8 hours a night and getting regular exercise?

  • Mental: Are you self-educating and writing down or recording your thoughts?

  • Emotional: Are you nurturing your creative side and engaging in activities that truly bring you joy?

  • Relationships: Are you spending quality, undistracted time with your loved ones?

  • Financial: Do you have a monthly budget and know exactly where your money's going?

  • Nutrition: Are you eating right?

  • Business: Are you focusing on the three most important tasks and allowing yourself breaks?

Before you say, 'I don’t have time for all of that', ask yourself why you've got time for scrolling on the toilet or long lunches?

The truth is, you have the time. It's all about priorities.

Let's break it down. You sleep 8 hours a night, right? No, let’s pretend. That leaves you with 16 hours to:

  • Exercise for 30 minutes

  • Budget for an hour or two

  • Take 30-minute creative breaks

  • Write or record thoughts for 15 minutes

  • Read or listen to a podcast for 15 minutes

  • Enjoy 2 hours of quality time with loved ones

  • Spend 2-3 hours prepping food for the week

Now, this week's strategy is more of a challenge:

  1. Find a mentor for each area you're struggling with.

  2. Try their technique for a full week, no excuses.

And if you don't know where to start ask yourself the

Question of the week:

  • "What do you want for yourself?"

When you have an answer, say it aloud three times and check your gut feelings. If you sense resistance, you might be living up to someone else’s expectations. Rinse and repeat until it feels authentic. Spend a minimum of 30 minutes on this questions.

  • Bonus question: "Who does your loved ones get when you're at your best?"

This isn’t about perfection, an utterly crap standard. But it is about setting and meeting realistic standards.
